  • Welcome and overview of Episode 1- “Paths: laying the infrastructure of a 1:1”
  • The infrastructure of ZPS’ 1:1
    • Internet- access is important
      • Local ISD takes proactive stance in making sure all schools have adequate access to the internet.
      • All schools covered by fiber optic cable
      • Changed out network equipment with fiber optic cabling traveling between schools within the district.
      • Wireless access points. Computer models generate access points. About 1.5 access points for every 2 classrooms.  Used high end technologies to ensure smooth access.

    • Servers vs. Web based
    • Printers- We needed to rethink what we printed with mobile devices.
      • Difficult for teachers and students at first
      • Forced the digital exchange of information- very new for everyone
    • Video streaming
      • Teachers were not using streaming services with access to sites like YouTube
    • File storage and sharing
      • Looking at how data was stored and shared in the past
      • Web-based technologies create less need for local storage and more cloud collaboration and sharing for teachers.
    • Google Apps for Education
      • Switched from a paid for service to Google Apps for schools
      • Students and teachers have Google Accounts allow for digital communication and workflow.
      • Switched to this prior to 1:1 launch. Allowed for teachers to become familiar.
    • Management of technologies
      • Ability to touch all devices across the district from 1 spot
      • Have the correct people in place to manage/repair equipment and train users.
    • Tools for teaching and Learning
      • Learning Management Systems
      • YouTube as a tool for teaching and learning
  • Has laying the above infrastructure been costly to the district?
    • Google Apps and Internet filter saved the district money
    • The 1:1 technologies has added great value to the learning environment
    • Save money on paper expense
    • Allowed for free and easy access to student data
    • Removed a bunch of barriers between teacher and learner
